It's that time of year when all the gardens are flourishing with new life.  Don't have a garden?  Perhaps try putting your old comics (or textbooks?) in the window and get growing!

"Manga Farming" is a project by Tokyo-based artist Koshi Kawachi, and is on display at the Matsuzakaya department store in Nagoya.

The process is simple... stand a book on its end, sprinkle with seeds (radish, broccoli, basil...) and water.  Sprouts start to appear in days!  A great way to upcycle materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill or recycling centre...

LEGO is paying tribute to it's second iconic architect with a new addition to the LEGO Architecture collection.  Own your very own piece of modernist history, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

This latest edition follows models of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and the Guggenheim Museum, as well as a number of other architectural landmarks.

The Conference theme,‘Ideas in Things’, addresses the unity of the discipline of architecture, offering an optimistic critique of the current separation of the academy and practice, or the mind and the hand. A book and film will document the conference.


The conference will feature a number of renowned speakers, including: Kenneth Frampton, Juhani Pallasmaa, Brian MacKay-Lyons, Patricia & John Patkau, Brigitte Shim & Howard Sutcliffe, Francis Kèré and many more.

The meaning of community

Pine Point is a beautiful and sad interactive film that explores the history and people of a planned mining community in Northern Canada.

The film visits the site where the town once stood, and many of the people who used to live there, asking many questions. What are the lasting effects of a town that was built from nothing and returned to nothing? What truth is there in our memories? Are we defined by the places we grew up? What are communities really made of?

Sweet Hearts

Got deadlines on the brain?  Crits haunting your dreams?  Pulling too many all-nighters?

It's that time of year again, but the library has something that will keep you going... sugar!

Step away from your desk and come take a guess at how many candies are in our Valentine's jar.  Not only will guessing the closest number win you a ridiculous amount of candy to share with the people you love, but we will also throw in a $10 Shoppers Drugmart Gift Card and... wait for it... A MONKEY! A monkey holding a heart!!!

We even have a prize for the runner-up because really, if you even come close you deserve something.

We will be picking the winners first thing on Valentine's Day... So put your spatial senses to the test today!

RACER Upgrades

...are a good thing!  Unfortunately it means that RACER will not be available between 6pm on Friday December 3rd and 9am on Tuesday December 7th.

Tonight: Get some sleep

The second of the 1/4 to 9 film series is playing tonight. Come check out Michel Gondry's The Science of Sleep in the School of Architecture theatre.
You can support your friendly neighbourhood film club in a number of ways:
- attend film screenings
- borrow movies from the library
- suggest new DVD purchases

It's a 1/4 to 9...

The Waterloo Architecture Film Club is kicking off its fall film series tomorrow night with A Single Man - the first film by designer Tom Ford.

"1/4 to 9" will feature four other films to follow throughout the term, ending with a night of short films created by the school community. For more information about the films to come, keep an eye on our blog. Knit CamBRIDGE - the finished product

Knitting was contributed by staff, students and faculty here at the School of Architecture, as well as some nervous-looking parents during admission week! Thanks to everyone who took some time to add a few stitches to the knitting in our basket.

Congratulations to Cambridge Artist-in-residence Sue Sturdy for bringing the community together to pull off such a large scale project. See our earlier post for more information about the project.
